I am going to have to own up here, I have recently objected to some planning applications and I could sort of be accused of being a NIMBY. I objected to some applications where people want to knock down their 1 house and build 10 on the patch of land left, or people who wanted to stuff 2 houses in their back gardens - supposedly Executive builds, I did this on the basis that these applications came with no parking provision and just add to the general overcrowding around the East part of the town over the last few years - its all a bit mad, we now have half the town crossing the town each morning to drop their kids off creating traffic jams loads of carbon footprint etc and their is no infrastructure in place to accomodate the increased density of people. What I learnt from my objection is that you have absolutely no chance of making a succesful protest against more housing, indeed the biggest reason why an application to build a house on your cabbage patch might be rejected is that you have not proposed a 5 bedroomer for the Cabbage Patch, the Compost Heap and the place where the kids used to have their swing! In housing the more the merrier,  however if you propose to build anything but a house you will immediately be rejected, so a changing room would definately be a non starter, as might be anything that would add to local convienance. I am cynical enough to believe that this is in part because the local tax yield is too low on anything but houses and houses are where central Government has set the targets
